I have a 96 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 engine
wondering if I could swap it into the 05 Ford
Explorer

Your 96 probably has a 4.0 push rod engine. The 05, if a V6, has a 4.0 SOHC engine. Anything is possible, but not a simple swap out. Different sensors and PCM.
