Low Cost HP Improvements

Asked by PatB333 Jan 14, 2013 at 08:52 PM about the 2007 Honda Civic Coupe LX

Question type: Car Customization

On 2007 Honda Civic Coupe LX, mechanics suggest intake, headers, & exhaust for $1300 for 15 more hp.  Are there other lower cost hp imrovements like K&N replacement air filter, power chip, Iridium spark plugs, or somethng else, and how much hp added?  Please state manufacturer or name brand of item., thanks.

a k&n replacement filter will not do anything for you in terms of hp. a cold-air intake will give some benefit. beware of claims of chips on ebay that have high numbers .they are junk. if you can find a chip, you might get 10hp.

Forget the power chip - most of them are a cheap resister that changes the intake air signal to the ECU. It makes the car run rich. For your other mods, check in at several Honda forums to see what other owners recommend.$1300 is a good amount of money - spend it wisely.

superchips, diablo sport are names that come to mind...but those are around $300 or more

Road & Track SPEED magazine published a story about this very question. They installed an intake/exhaust/header on a DA9 with a B18b and then put it on the dyno. They received, like, a 7 whp increase in power. You're not going to get very much power out of these low-displacement engines without a some kind of forced induction. Or, you could alwats swap out that R18 for a Japanese K20a :p
