well, it wouldn't be a Rover- the money spent keeping that running would pay for the kid's college- I kinda like the new Kia Optima- I wouldn't touch a VW with a 10 foot pole, but from personal experience, those first New Beetles are the safest things in a collision- no lie! they are protective bubbles- get one with low mileage, without a sunroof, and NOT a diesel or turbo- then you are ready for whatever the idiots on the road throw at you- btw, be careful about getting anything recent with the shrapnel airbags-
