Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turned my 97 Subaru legacy 2.5gt off. When I tried to restart it everything was dead!!! It was like the battery wasn't hooked up. I took the keys out and walked in the house. I looked outside and the tail light were on and the front amber lights were on. I tried to start it and nothing. I cleaned the battery posts but it didn't help. I unhooked the positive cable and put the key in the ignition and turned it on in order to hook the positive cable up. It started just fine, however the running lights are still on and the dash lights are blinking! I turned the engine off and the running lights were still on and the dash lights were still blinking. I had to unhook the positive cable to stop this process. Can anybody out there point me in the right direction???

WOW such a well thought out answer. I guess life is good for you huh? You know if man built it then a man can fix it. I just need some real intelligent responses please.

I sent that too soon so I’ll continue with explaimation : the contacts in the key cylinder are sticking (worn) not moving past the nub that connects the electrical for that position causing the drain in battery and even non release of position for proper driving mode and in turn causing the battery to be drained as the car is slightly in a start in gaged position my 98 outback was doing exactly what each of you experiaced and it was after a couple weeks of unsurity it was clear that the ignition was my problem ... oh and it will be a woman who gave this so much intelligent thought so to the no so smart and unkind response to the reply from someone else’s feedback It is not as if you had a answer so you r response about a by answer is a direct sign of how intelligent to are NOT so to others who need a possible answer Check your Ignition (key) switch but as always check the cheapest repairs first - starter cable to battery - cable to switch ...Corrosion can happen on the inside of the cables non-scene and can really be deceiving so don’t eliminate that possibility just because they look good hope this works for you guys like I said I’m just a girl pretty girl with a lot of college work for me have a good day
