Okay. Maybe because I am a girl! What is it for or why and when would I use it?

If you want to play shiftier it allows you to manually select a gear. an example when accelerating (to pass a vehicle) you could reach over then pull down into a lower gear for passing, holding in that gear until you upshift... Really theres no need to manual shift an automatic unless you want to pretend you're A BOY RACER ! Regards
