My '92 Lumina 3.1 with 163K miles has an intermittant "Service Engine Soon" light that comes on and off every few minutes while driving. The codes come up MAP sensor and knock sensor...what gives?

Before I start replacing expensive sensors, I'd like tp know why my Lumina idiot light comes on and after a few minutes turns off while driving. It feels like for the few minutes it is on the engine does run rougher but then goes back to normal when the light goes off.
Also, the engine drips oil and leaves stains everywhere I park it...is there any effective aftermarket stuff I can add to the motot oil to at least slow down the drips? I thiink it's the rear main seal that's worn.

Ideally you should locate the source of the drip. If you have a leaky gasket somewhere then you should remove it, clean the surface, verify that the metal has not been scored or warped, place a new gasket and sealant, and torque to specifications. If the leak is around the valve covers or the oil pan then the repair is fairly easy. If the leak is around the heads or manifold then the work is a bit more tedious and more gaskets are needed. You can easily test a knock sensor using an ohm meter. You should verify that the vacuum line on the MAP does not have a pin hole or leak anywhere. You can test the MAP with an ohm meter as well. If the vacuum line is in question then you can rent a small pump to apply pressure at the vacuum hose connection for testing purposes.

Chevy Lumina 91 3.1 4dr...multi...I got a codes, 14 and 42...14 is heat temp high...and 42 is a ESC or EST Eletric Spark Timing, now I went and got a paper clip to pull these codes...it works. 12,12,12, and 14,14,14 and then 4..2 so it is 42...42 is behind the coil pack and then also it is connected to the crank sensor...What ever it is...I did check spark on the to top right side coil pack and the spark is powerful...removing 2 plug wires to test spark...so under that, change that and then the crank sensor...and the the Heat sensor for the water or radiator 14 code. Any other helps is good...Thanks! 7 Answers

before it stalls engine light comes on all the time before it stalls...Code 42 and code 14 is what I got...I am going to change the crank sensor in the morning to see if this helps...but I am welco...

My Lumina's "Service Engine Soon" light came on as I tried to turn over the ignition. The engine turned over, however the engine seemed to be oscillating and shook the car. I turned it off, popped the hood. I couldn't find anything visually wrong. So I turned it over again, same idiot light and oscillation, however I noticed smoke coming from the electrical component up front under the exhaust manifold. This car is a 1996, w/ 155Kmiles and a new computer and 50K on the new trannie. I love the car and don't want to get rid of it, what should this be? Is it worth repairing? Is the smoke (like that of a burnt electrical component) related to the oscillation? I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you 1 Answer

1996 lumina, LS, 3.1L. We use only synthetic oil. I noticed the oscillation and idiot light together. the smoke was a couple of days later when i tried to trouble shoot.
