Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving my car about 40 mph.  I started to hear a clunking noise from the
engine.  Car quickly lost power. I pulled over to curb and stopped car.   Steam
from under the hood.  No service engine light came on.  When I tried to start
car, lights come on, etc., engine makes whirring noise, does not turn over.
Radiator is full.  Belt is in place.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

As cars get older, lots of things can happen and there is a chance the check engine lamp is burnt out. Trying to resolve problems by long distance can be a problem but my first guess is your engine overheated....the clunking noise could be spark knock and the steam speaks for itself. Now you need to find out WHY.... "engine makes whirring noise, does not turn over" how can the engine make a whirring sound if it is not turning over? maybe it is the starter not kicking in and you are hearing the starter spinning. I think you need someone with experience to look and listen to the car..
