The ABS light stays on along with the Traction Control light.

Asked by xwrightxjax Jul 27, 2015 at 08:44 PM about the 2005 Buick LaCrosse CX FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

These lights come on after the car is started.  The last time I had the car in the shop
I had 4 MM of wear left on the front brakes.  The rear brakes were replaced last year.
The car has 94 K mileage.  The front brakes were replaced with 62 K on them.  Rear brakes had 87 K when they were replaced.  The car had 91 K when the front brakes
had 4 MM wear left.  All the fuses check out OK.  The ABS has s solenoid. Maybe that is bad?  If the front brakes need to be replaced would that be the cause of the
warning lights to stay on?

Typically when both these lights come on it may be a bad wheel speed sensor, which means the wheel bearing will need to be changed. I would recommend taking it to the shop to have that looked at. Hope this helps!

1) make sure your brake fluid is topped off 2) have autozone do a diagnostic check and pull codes. 3) could be one or more of your ABS speed sensors (NOT wheel bearing)

The speed sensor is built into the wheel bearing on some GM vehicles like my 2008 Buick Lacrosse so if the speed sensor is found to be defective the bearing unit has to be replaced - YES wheel bearing.

I have know answer. But I have the same problem. Had wheel bearing replaced but both indicator lights are still on.

I replaced the wiring harness to the left front wheel. A local auto parts store always carries the harness in stock because it is requested by repair shops so often. Problem solved :)

I forgot to mention that I did prove the problem I had to the left front wheel. I bounced both front sides of the vehicle while parked and monitored the indicator lights. It seemed that the left side would activate the lights. I took a chance and assumed there was a short in the harness on the left side and replaced that harness. The harness replacement that I purchased would fit both left or right side. Maybe I got lucky picking the left side. This is not very scientific but it isn't brain surgery either. Cost under $60.00 plus my time. I am a DIY backyard mechanic. Makes you wonder "why can't 'real' mechanics find this first before they replace bearings?"

My first post in this thread stated 'The speed sensor is built into the wheel bearing on some GM vehicles like my 2008 Buick Lacrosse so if the speed sensor is found to be defective the bearing unit has to be replaced - YES wheel bearing'. That is how the wheel bearing has something to do with the ABS light. Search the internet to find out more.

I replaced all four hubs, struts, rotors and pads and light still on with my tire sensor light. What could be my problem....help please

pull the codes with a diagnostics tool at autozone... test TPMS sensors at a wheel/tire place or dealer... see if all sensors are communicating properly... and have them reset and re-linked to your TPMS module...

Sugab313 You spent a lot of money replacing the wrong things. Might as well try this next. ( I took this right from Rockauto.) DORMAN part #970040 2008 Buick Lacrosse ABS Harness (ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Connector) Easily and affordably restore the anti-lock brake system to proper, safe functioning with Dorman's Anti-Lock Brake Wheel Speed Sensor Wire Harness. It's sold separately, enabling you to replace only the failed harness-instead of the entire assembly. Connector included for easy mounting to the sensor Plug and play for ease of installation; no wire splicing necessary Designed for an exact fit every time Durable against harsh road and weather conditions, including winter salt and water intrusion Connector Material Plastic Connector/Terminal Type Male Jacket Material Plastic Package Contents Abs Harness Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 10340314, 10340316 This is what fixed my problem. After too many years of flexing at the lowe rcontrol arm the wiring in the harness breaks. Mine was on the driver side front end. An OBDII reader couldn't connect to my ABS system and the guy couldn't tell me how long it would take to diagnose and fix so I took a chance and $50 Canadian dollars later...:) :) :). http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/buick,2008,lacrosse,3.8l+v6, 1440065,electrical- connector,abs+wheel+speed+sensor+connector,762

I have a 2010 Buick LaCrosse with abs and service stabilitrak lights on. When I asked dealer to check it out I was quoted $400. They also found a failed differential sensor module failure. That is $3400 to repair because they have to get in and check all the sensors.....??? Have to consult another mechanic but this wiring harness idea might be a good place to start

2009 Lacrosse with these same issues. Changed left hub bearing assembly, same problem. Was told by service department that sometimes codes are masked behind other codes, so when 1 problem is corrected, another pops up. does this sound right???

The ABS system communicates with all 4 ABS wheel sensors. The ABS and Traction Control lights would come on as soon as you start the car if there is no communcation between the ABS module and any of the sensors at each wheel. My 2008 Buick Lacrosse would only come on occasionally. Sometimes I could feel a 'studder' in the left front end when I was pulling into a driveway on the left or a parking spot with no ABS/Traction control lights on but that is when they would come on. If your ABS/traction control lights do not come on unless the car is put in motion try this - unplug any one of the wiring harnesses at any one wheel. I suggest the left front. Start the car. Do the ABS/Traction control lights come on? They should. Basically you are simulating a open harness that would prevent the ABS module from reading anything back from the ABS sensor. Plug it back in and start the car to clear the ABS/Traction control lights. An intermittant problem is harder to diagnose than a hard failure. You could try removing the harness one at a time at each wheel and shorting the two wires in the harness together. I have never tried it and don't know if the ABS module would recognize this as a problem or has a complete circuit. If the lights do not come when you start your car (hard fault) you could try bouncing the car at each corner or moving the wiring harness (jiggle) around to see if that triggers the ABS/Traction control lights to come on. This is what worked for me and proved an intermittant open in the harness. Rememer there is a lot more flexing in the front end with bouncing and turning. The wiring harness is connected to the lower control arm and as much as it is clamped in several places over time something is gonna give.

Just had mine repaired. Apparently on the inside of the hub there is a small strip of what appears to be little magnets that comes in like 100+ little sections that appear to be glued on. Apparently a few of them fell off causing my ABS warning light to go on. Parts & Labor from my local mechanic $335.87 because the entire hub had to be replaced.

My left wiring harness replaced. Thanks to this site, (Dealer wanted to repair differential sensor as well . $3400! ) I told them to try wiring harness first and to reset the codes. Service guy said my rear end could lock up on me! But after codes reset both lights did go out. $400 fix. If hubby were still here it probably would have been user &100, but so thankful to have those lights out!!'

2005 buick lacrosse. Abs and traction lights came on once in a while (backing out of driveway, tight left turns, never driving in a straight line). replace bearing (code for left front was read at oreilly). Have replaced same one twice more for same problem in a month. Harness or abs module next? When bearing is not on car but plugged in, it doesnt trip the sensor when I turn the wheel, when i put it on the car, it trips the sensor.

I was told by a dealership this was a KNOWN issue with the wiring harness on the front wheels and would cost me close to $500 PER WHEEL to fix. I have reported this to safercar.gov as a safety issue since it disables traction control and ABS. This website is for the NHTSA. I think if enough of us report this problem, then Buick will be forced to issue a recall, especially if they claim it's a "KNOWN ISSUE!"

No problems since I changed the wiring harness on the front left (driver) side with a part from RockAuto. It is manufactured by Dorman and can be bought at any auto parts store. I installed the harness myself. Cheapest solution and the right one!!! Don't let dealerships try to sell you an absurd bill of goods. Try it. What have you got to lose? $40? See my previous posts.

I have a 2005 Buick LaCrosse CXS. My ABS and Traction Lights have come on. Took it to a local Buick dealer and they said I needed to replace the wiring harness part #25795962 and part # 12591889. Paid $300 for them to diagnose and re-wire something. ABS and Traction Control light still stayed on. They were to research finding parts. Took car back to dealer to be told Buick does not make these parts anymore! They recommended I find someone who works on older cars. I was shocked to hear this! I am not a car mechanic so I am at a loss to fix my car. Other than this it drives beautifully.

GM is trying to sell you the complete $600+ wiring harness. I bet they did not tell you how much the labor charge would be to install it. $$$$$# And part #12591889 is not available and probably not needed to fix your problem. Ask friends, family and neighbors where they would recommend you take your vehicle to have a ABS traction control problem to be diagnosed. Also search the internet - 'ABS traction control repair (your city name)'. There are many reputable along with disreputable repair shops outside of dealerships. Do your homework. The $300 you paid to "diagnose and re-wire something" obviously did not fix the problem. If this is an intermittent problem they are the hardest to correctly diagnose. If the ABS and Traction Control light come on right away then this is the easiest to diagnose by a 'real' technician. If you have money everybody wants it and will say and do whatever they can to get your money even if they know they haven't got a clue on what is wrong. Make them prove it to you. It is not enough to say 'oh we know for certain'. Good luck. Post your fix some day. Real results help us all.

It is a common issue to have a broken wire to the speed sensor from the main harness on the car usually runs up front core support for passenger side follow connector may be visible break also have someone watch the light move the harness if light goes out your getting close

I just had this problem with my mother's 2007 Buick LaCrosse CXL and thought I'd share my experience... ABS and Trac Control was constantly coming on while she was driving. ABS would activate at random times, which was probably really annoying. I pulled the codes and it stated "right wheel speed sensor malfunction" and "frequency input.....". So I put the car up and removed the wheels. Since I didn't know the specs for voltage and resistance measurements for the sensors, I just compared the right to the left since the left was okay. Both speed sensors measured about 1200 ohms, so I knew nothing was shorted inside. Also, with the car ON but not running, the signal coming from the wiring harnesses was 4.8 Volt. So they both seemed identical....making it difficult to diagnose the problem. Since bearings don't cost too much for these cars, I just purchased one and replaced it. Immediately I got the same problem after the "repair". Damn! Waste of money and time I thought... Then I noticed that the lights ONLY seem to come on when I turn the wheel left. If I turn it right, the lights stay off. That made me think bad wiring... Then I watched a video of a guy removing about 3' of the wiring harness from the clips on the car and peeling back the wire loom and tape. He found one of the wires broken in three places. So I decided to check the wiring harness the same way. When I peeled back the wire loom, there was ONE spot where the electrical tape the wires were wrapped in was torn. The wires looked fine and the insulation was fully in tact. HOWEVER, when I measured the signal voltage at the connector this time, it read 0V. I started bending the wiring at that spot where the tape was missing, and that's when the voltage started fluctuating all over between 0v and 4.8V. So there's the explanation of why the lights would come on ONLY when the wheel was turned to the left. The wire was broken INSIDE the insulation and I couldn't see it. So I replaced the harness (DORMAN part #970040, suggested by Beinghelpful above) and now it seems to be fine. I only replaced it recently, but when I test drove the car afterward there were no lights when turning any direction. The point is that you can't always SEE the problem. If the resistance of the wheel speed sensor is good (about 1200 ohms or so), then it's probably the ABS module or wiring causing the problem. And if the ABS and Trac lights don't come on immediately after starting the car, then the ABS module is probably fine. Intermittent ABS and Trac control lights are most likely a fault in the wiring. And FYI --- If you buy the harness and go to splice the wires, be sure to compare the new wire colors to the old so you don't get them mixed up. The directions for my harness gave me faulty instructions on which color wires to splice together because they assembled it reverse when it was made. Good thing I looked beforehand :O

Yesterday both the ABS &the no traction lights came on while driving. Minutes after they came on I took an exit ramp at maybe 30 mph. Hit black ice; did 3 360's , barely missed a light pole and a steel marker pole. After reading up on this, it would explain why I ended up skidding so far. I just had my brakes worked on 2 weeks ago.

I have a 2000 Buick Le Sabre and the traction control and abs light came on. Got the codes read, and there was codes for the front left brake sensor and codes for an open circuit for that sensor. I jumped the gun and replaced the front hub assembly as the speed sensor is integrated with the hub.Lights still on. I then had a look at the wiring harness. One of the wires inside the protective cable was pulled apart.(broken) I could have purchased a new wiring harness, but I decided to try and splice in a 4 inch piece of 18 gauge wire.(between the two broken ends of the wire inside.) Soldered the splices, taped any exposed wires and covered with wiring protector that I purchased at auto parts store. Total cost, 88 dollars for a hub I probably didn't need, 4 cents for the wire, and 4 cents for the solder and tape that I used and 5 dollars for the wiring protector. A lot cheaper than the 600 I was quoted to fix the problem by the repair shop .

The original car wire colors for the speed sensor cable are black and white while the replacement wires are yellow and blue. Does it make any difference if the wires are reversed?
