Cannot shift gear from R to P

My car would not shift gear from R to P.. Yesterday,
I had parked my car on a hill. When trying to
remove it, it gave a thud on reverse. It is working
fine without a problem. But cannot shift gear from
R to P. It does show shifting from R to P. But does
not stop the car nor the locking system opens
automatically as when you put the car on P

Thanks for your suggestions.. This was not the first time I heard the thud while reverse on a hill. The pointer does not blink on the P.. It finishes at R... Appreciate your kind response and feedback
