Help with ESP/BAS light.

Asked by GBlaser Mar 17, 2020 at 02:10 PM about the 2007 Jeep Commander Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had my whole front end replaced (rack and
pinion and both under and lower ball joints) on
my 2007 jeep commander. Then about 3 days
later, my ESP/BAS light and my Traction
Control light came on, is there an easy repair
for this? Any help is appreciated.

For some reason all the Jeep lines seem to have those strange warning light issues. Sometimes when we have work done on our vehicles, we end up with issues, like in your case. What is very common with Chrysler/Dodge automobile lines is this. If 1 sensor goes bad, it usually causes 2 or more lights to come on. I'm 95% certain you'll get your answer there in your google search. Google - The ESP, BAS & Traction Control warning lights come on when I start the engine. What I have read is that whenever Jeep owners [with Jeep, any model, newer than 2004-5] has something done to the front end, it triggers one of the lights you mentioned to come on. Sometimes the repair facility needs to reset the ECM. We commonly know this as removing the battery cables for 10 or 15 minutes to clear out the ECM. But with the newer lines, sometimes we have to plug into the ECM & manually clear out the stored error codes. Now with your vehicle, you should take it to an Autozone or O'Riley Auto Parts store & ask them if they'll check your vehicle for error codes. They do this for free because they're banking that you'll buy parts from them right then on the spot. Don't buy anything, just get a list of the codes that your vehicles ECM stored. What I ended up doing was joining repair pal .com & a Jeep Patriot site so I could get advice from other Jeep Patriot owners. 50% of the time I find the answer in those forums & fix it myself. Another thing you should do is contact the shop that performed the work & ask if their mechanic or technician reset your vehicle after he installed the parts. Both front wheels have electronic sensors, that plug into them. Doing work can, ''Can'' but ''Not Always'' trigger a warning light to come on if it's bad, or could get replaced with a bad sensor, or [and yes this still happens] purposely installed a bad sensor ***but I would never say that I think they did that.*** [I never like to fight with people bigger than me] Don't act like your world has just caved in, just ask them straight forward questions. Also you're not going to bring your vehicle back for their $79.99 ''50 Point Inspection'' Special. They'll probably find at least $249.99 list of parts that they suspect is the problem, only to find out that they were wrong so bring it back in. How does the saying go, ''Be Wise As Serpents'' & also, Seek Wise Counsel. It has got to the point that I do most of my own work. So far the only thing I need the Dealership for is to do any Software Updates to the ECM, which may need to be done after certain parts have been replaced, since that can also cause lights to come on & stay on too..... I know I just said a lot but hopefully I was able to help you out because I have been where you're at myself & it can suck.....
