2001 Jetta smokes at 75mph, not TDI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A friend of mine has a 2001 Jetta, she said that when she is driving on the highway at about 75mph it will smoke badly and lose power.  If she slows down (even to 65mph) it stops.  Any ideas?  This is not a diesel Jetta.

sounds like the engine has worn rings- and is losing compression- meaning, New Engine- maybe I'm wrong, I hope so- do a compression test-

yea sounds about right on what jam blues said have a compression test done and check for any oil driping out of the heat covers or under the engine.
