Why won't my car start?

Hey friends! I have a 2001 diesel Volkswagen(its a standard. I'm just trying to
give all the info I can). Yesterday I went to go to work and I turned the key
with my foot on the clutch and it didn't want to start. It seemed to turn over
(I'm trying my best to use the correct terms. My apologies if i don't) but not
start. All my lights on my dash would light up but nothing else happens
except the shakes it always gets when it starts up. I really need ya'lls help.
I'm just a 16 y/0 with a bad relationship w/ her dad. Right now I've got 570$
to fix it but i don't think that's enough. Thanks to all who reply. I'll try my best
to keep you updated and reply myself.

(i also know its a TDi but im not sure if it's GL or GLS)

Are your glow plugs working? What does the glow plug light on the dash show? I would check to make sure your fuel filter is clean.
