Would it be wise to purchase a 1997 C230 with 135 K miles $5,000

Asked by alba Oct 14, 2007 at 03:21 AM about the 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 230 Sedan

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

The car seems in good condition, but I am concerned about incurring high expenses soon due to the high mileage. I have just glanced at the vehicle.  I will see it this week to ask questions.   I have been wanting to purchase a used MBenz.  I am a school teacher and I drive just about 20 miles RT to school.

I am wondering if I should wait and purchase instead a 2000+ model later on.
I have seen (web)  advertised for about $20K - 20,000 miles or so.

I would like to purchase a vehicle that I can rely on and keep for a quite a few years.    I am  contemplating retirement in the next 1-2 years,  so I would not be able to incur a high debt later on.

Which would be the best choice?  Overall including wear/safety.  230C or 240 model??

I drive a 1988 Park Avenue Buick - 211,000 miles. Good, reliable car.

I thank you in advance for your advice.   albagm19@yahoo.com

From one schoolteacher to another, let me tell you -- if they're blowing it out for $5k, there's probably a reason. I would stay away from the MB's altogether, especially if you are not automotive-savvy, as the cost for parts alone can be quite pricey. For example, when I was a mechanic, we got a 1991 MB 300 in the shop with a bad alternator at 149k miles. List price on the alternator by itself was $600. This does not include diag time, a new battery, or labor to install, which was quite involved. Total job would have come to around $1100. The vehicle also needed a muffler -- $235 our cost for this part. I'd sooner see you keep the Park Ave, or get something American-made or at least American-produced, like a Toyota, which will serve you much better.

Is it well maintained? If so the answer is yes, but find a good technician 2 service 4 it will cost u a pretty pennies to keep
