Ring gear making contact with abs speed sensor

Asked by Sarah Jun 03, 2018 at 10:50 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok so  I’m having an issue when the abs ring witch
is attached to the ring gear is making contact with
the abs speed sensor, I replaced the sensor twice
and both times it drove fine for 20 or 30 miles and
then made contact with the sensor again. After
pulling the diff cover I noticed a few chatter marks
on the inside of the diff cover, what could be
causing this to happen?

Look for pieces of the original ABS sensor wrapped around the tone ring/ring gear or hiding somewhere in the differential. Short of that, if there's scrape marx on the diff cover, the only other thing to consider would be the some piece inside the diff has broken off n is free to wreak havoc whilst the diff is in motion. Try moving the carrier ass'y around n see if it moves at all.

BTW, is this a factory limited slip diff? If the clutches are old n bad, they can disintegrate n produce such a problem.
