starter 2002 chevy trailblazer

i put a starter on my 2002 chevy trailblazer. it makes a grinding noise when i try
to start it. how do i fix this and what is it?

Battery has a full charge and connections all good? If it makes that terrible grinding noise, the starter drive gear isn't meshing with the flywheel, for some reason, it will make a terrible noise, if that is what your hearing? Did the old starter motor have shims? Did the new starter motor come with shims? Check the flywheel teeth and double check your work. Just my opinion.
