Is putting the cap on the resevour cause the
thermostat to go out

Thermostats are heated up every time you drive the vehicle to around 200 degrees. Materials wear out over time. How many miles on your 18 years vehicle? A thermostat is a $10 part.

They go bad all on their own, and you should always have a cap on the overflow/reservoir.
