I think my clutch went out

I was downshifting from 4th to third and it
decelerated to 20.I put it in 2nd;the rpms revved to
5,000 without me giving it more gas.I then noticed
a burning rubber smell from the engine area on my
side of the car.I got it in first and made it home.Is it
the clutch?

There's a simple way to test a clutch. Overheating the clutch can cause such smells as you're describing. The way I've always tested my clutch is a lower speed, higher gear heavy acceleration. Basically, go into top gear at around 30mph or so and give it a lot of throttle. If the engine RPM increases very fast without the vehicle accelerating fast to match; the clutch is slipping. If it just lugs, your clutch is gripping fine. What you explained is a downshift at to high of speed. The smell may be associated if you slipped the clutch enough when downshifting to cause it to overheat. The clutch is very similar to brake pads (though very different in its own respect). Overheating them will cause premature wear and can be very bad smelling. Let it cool and don't slip the clutch any more than is required to get the vehicle moving. Do the test I explained and if the car revs up without matching acceleration to the increase in RPM, you may need to have the clutch inspected. Just so you know, a friend of mine had a 1991 Ford Ranger with a worn out clutch that was slipping. He drove the thing like that for nearly 10,000 miles. Forewarning on that, he destroyed the clutch itself finally when it fell into pieces.
