1999 Toyota Solara loud knocking engine sound

Asked by salinnj Apr 03, 2011 at 11:03 AM about the 1999 Toyota Camry Solara 2 Dr SE Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

First, thank you for reading this post and helping out.

Here is my issue.  I bought a 1999 Toyota Solara in 2008 at about 155k miles.  I have changed the oil regularly every 3000 miles.  This car was driven in and out of New York City and around the tri-state area.  Lots of urban stop&go driving.

The other day I started up the car and heard a pinging like sound.  It seemed minor and thought that maybe I had some bad gas.  I went to a gas station and filled it up with premium about 5 gallons.  I drove it about 30 miles and it seemed fine at first.  Then when I got it off the highway I started to hear a very loud knocking like noise from the engine.  I drove it a little further and it stalled.  The car was then towed to my home.

I took a video of the engine and placed it on Youtube so you can hear and see exactly what is happening.  Here is the youtube link:

I did a little research around the web looking at other youtube videos and suspect it might be a bent rod or rod bearings.  On Monday, I am taking the video down to my local mechanic.

My question is what do you think the issue might be?  How much will it be to get it fixed?

Once again, thank you for your time and trouble in answering this post.  I am going to repost this in the camry general forum so I can get all the responses.  Its an important issue to me because this is what I use for transportation.

Maybe you should try tightening that loose bolt on the altinator... Might stop that screeching too. I REALLY hope you didn't get ripped of by your garage the way you say you were about to.

Take it to a auto parts store like autozone or advance auto to get your engine diagnostics done for free. Find out if it registers anything and get the part then take it to a honest mechanic to put it in. Sounds like the knock sensor is going out on yo. That's what happened to my 99 Solara.
