I have small amount of oil leaking from the cover of the timing belt. If the Avalon has a timing chain, what could the oil to leak down?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Took the 2006 Toyota Avalon to a dealership to find what is leaking oil from the timing
case cover. They said the problem was the timing belt needs to replaced. The Avalon has
a chain, so can they be talking about seals that need to be replaced?  Or am I being
taken for a ride?

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/156-3rd-generation-2005- 2012/502930-2005-avalon-timing-cover-oil-leak.html -- check this out. seems a lot of 3rd gen toyotas have this issue. From what I have found its a costly repair due to the labor involved.

I was told it would be about $1600.00 at the dealership. The labor is expensive, but I wouldn't feel good by taking it to a non-dealership mechanic. Is it the seals? that causes it to leak oil, very small amount, about the size of a hand, and not all the time. The oil seems very clean that is on the driveway. I would change the water pump and anything else that would be there, I don't have any problems with water pump. Could I put this off for a litlle while?

Some users talk of using high mileage oil which is thicker and will not leak as much. But I do not advise that. Some say the leaking oil land on the rubber boots below causing them to fail early. No easy fix I feel. But might want to check into the service bulletin that toyota put out about this issue. The gasket material they used at factory fail prematurely and since then they are using a different material for the gasket. Might get some help with the cost of repairs if yours is listed in the bulletin.

My wife and I had this happen on our 2005 Avalon, which we bought new and took perfect care of. We solved thenproblem by selling the car (less the repair cost) to our uncle who was happy to get it. One possible solution - sell the car.
