2002 subaru outback racks

Asked by Joe Nov 28, 2018 at 10:51 AM about the 2002 Subaru Outback Limited

Question type: Car Customization

I want to get one of those cvs tent and put it on top
of my outback. Now is the weight limit just in
relation to the racks? Cause if th ar is the case I
was thinking of just making some with better
support. Or is the weight limit for the vehicle as
well. Tent is about 120lbs I believe and I am around
250lbs

You asked that already. 370 pounds is way over the limit of 150 pounds.

I previous question I did not receive a definitive answer on the roof it self but on the racks. That's why I am asking here is to see if the roof it self can take the weight and the weight restriction only reflects towards the racks them self. Things I have read have only talked about the racks bending on them but holding but none of those have been on a subaru. So if you know off chance if that weight restriction is for the racks alone or the entire roof its self even with reinforced racks (the tent would not be just laying on the roof its self.) I would appreciate that

Since you can't load the roof without using the racks it is all the same thing. The racks keep the load off the roof and transfers the load to the side where there is some strength. I doubt the roof could take 30 pounds without bending. The roof is just a flat piece of sheet metal. Think about it. My truck roof deflects when the car wash fan blows on it. Try walking on your roof if you don't believe me!

Lol. Let me put it this way if I was to stand the racks they would bend but the portion of the roof that they are attached to might not the center of the roof would cave in with just a 100lbs. Most people on other vehicles have the issue of the racks bending under the weight not the body of the vehicle. So I am not asking if the roof can take the weight but if I replaced the racks with stronger racks that could take that weight would the side of the body the part the racks attached too be able to take it. If you dont get it and it sounds the same to you please reframe from answering.

Shop around for roof racks that are rated for 400 pounds or more. I do not think you will find any. Check out Thule and Yakima but I already know the answer. All aftermarket systems for your car rely on the factory rails. Keep on beating that dead horse! Good luck to you, I hope you find what you want.
