Battery good, car won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I went to crank my car this morning and nothing happened.  All the electronics come on as well as the lights.  There is no dimming when I try to start it.  I had the battery tested (not even a year old) and it came back reading good.  There is no click when I start it.  Nothing happens.  What should I check?  Thanks.

If all your connections are tight to the starter and your battery is good you probably need a tow truck and a good mechanic. It's impossible for us to trouble shoot something like this with no real information.

Thanks guys. It was the ignition switch and starter relay. I do have a good mechanic that I can trust. Those seem rare in my area.

my daughters 2005 cobalt is doing the same thing. It won't do anything when she tries to turn the key. Battery is new, lights and everything work fine. The car sat for 2 days then for the hell of it we tried starting it and it started right up. The next day she drove it, parked it and then when to start it and the same thing happened. Any ideas?

Scan it for trouble codes. Check that all grounds are clean and tight and that battery connections are tight. Ignition switches and their associated solenoid and relays can fail. Have those components checked by someone with a good understanding of automotive electrical systems. Troubleshoot first. Then spend money on the repair.

Same things happening to my car now, wouldn't turn over last night then around 7:00 this morning it turned over test drove it then it stalled when I put it in reverse again, tried again about 6:30 this afternoon and it turned over 4 times and stayed on 15 minutes each time until I shut the car off. But still don't wanna drive till I know what's up with it, anyone know anything I should check that won't cost me too much right now?

What trouble codes came up when you scanned it. Scanning is free, or next thing to it.

same thing has happened to me in the past and is now happening to me again when it first happened all I did was let it sit and it fired right up 2 days later been told its the starter relay in cobalts that have an issue and that not much can be done to fix it

18,245

That doesn't sound like advice from a technician. If its the starter relay that's at fault it would simply need to be replaced.

Under drivers seat water ate away wire and shorted out

Dry out your car. Fix the wire and figure out where the water’s coming from. Do you have a sunroof. They are prone to leaking or having the drains get plugged. Also how is the car parked during wet weather. I find if I park mine facing uphill in the rain I end up with water inside. If I park level or downhill it’s fine.

I had same problems it was a burnt or loose wire from the ignition in the steering column.

I had the same problem so I checked all the fuses and the only one that was blown was for the cigarette lighter so I replaced it and now it starts fine.

Same problem. New starter, new battery, checked the starter relay by swapping in a new one. Don't have a mechanic I trust who does electrical. It was only happening on occasion and restarted 20-40 minutes later, last night it took an hour and forty minutes. Used to be a long time between recurrences, now it's happening every day.

I found my problem, probably won't help anyone else. Apparently the previous owner mounted a starter kill switch to prevent theft. When he went to sell the car, he removed the switch but not the wiring, and he used cheap aluminum wires. When the wire heated up, the car would not start, and when it comes down, it would.

Just had to remove the wire.

Glad you found it. Messing with the wiring on modern cars is always risky. The electrical system is so sensitive to everything it takes very little to upset it.

Alrighty, I'm having the same issue. Replaced battery and new starter as well. Turned key let it do its cycle then go to start and it just clicks like 3-7 times then stops turn key off remove key then put the key back in repeat with same results just clicking sound then nothing.

Sounds like a bad ground or power connection somewhere. Double check everything you’ve worked on to make sure you didn’t miss one.

I have a 2009 cobalt no crank no start new battery checked all the fuses any ideas. Not doing anything no clicking can hear fuel pump coming on have power to the starter scratching my head on this one thanks!

18,245

I'd suspect the starter itself if there's power to it and the fuel pump is cycling. Take it off and have it tested before you buy a new one though.

Check in trunk a large orange fuse is what gave me the problem it set next to the battery black plug, orange fuse.

I have checked the fuse going to the battery in the trunk. I have also checked that I have fuel going to the injectors. I do not get a security light at all and my check engine light is on. Still no solution

Check the fuse in the trunk next to battery,or check ignition switch electrical part, also take your vin number and call the dealer talk to a service advisor give them the vin number to see if there any recalls or campaigns for your car.

My father in laws Cobalt had an issue in the engine compartment fuse box. There is a wire in the upper left corner that when wiggled, it would make the car start again. Apparently there is a short there, possibly in the connector.

I'm having trouble with my 09 Cobalt(no cranck), it seem I'm not getting power on the pin out on the bcm(body control module) to the rest of the system. I'm also not getting and of my warning lights on my dash wich is also controlled by the bcm. i m trying.to.back.trace it cause I started at the starter solenoid. I believe I'm testing the right wire, it's hard to find a decent schematic of the wiring.i tested ignition and I'm getting power out and because how cobalts work, when turn key to start it drop the voltage of the accessory wich signals the bcm to send out a start signal to the rest off the system. My security light is not on. Battery good just bought a months ago. I ordered a new bcm I will let y'all know of it works.

Mine turned out to be the circuit board in the fuse box was blown. I replaced the fuse box with one off the internet for a couple hundred bucks and it started and runs like a champ again. I was having a no start/nocrank issue, and was getting no power to the signal wire to the starter, also it wasn't cycling the emergency lights on the dash.

I shorted the window switch out and mine doing s a me thing. Want start radio don't work and it showing power steering on dash

4 people found this helpful.
18,245

If you shorted something out I’d start by checking all fuses and relays to see if anything is blown. Also check battery and grounds. Scanning for trouble codes never hurts although in this case I wouldn’t expect too much information there.

I been having the same thing. Happen to me twice with in last six months

Turned out to be my fuse box , then about 2 months later my starter went bad but the original condition was solved with new fuse box under the hood which was very easy to replace.

18,245

Christina, what trouble shooting have you done so far to find the problem?

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt i put a new engine in when i went to test fire alls it does is click once not repeatedly i checked all my fuses they looked good checked all my grounds made sure everything was connected but at last it still wont crank

260

I was not getting power to the accessory wire from the bcm. When testing the ignition wires the power should drop out I tells the bcm to do it thing when it loses power rather than gains.u can have the bcm and ECU/ECM at a dealership.i could even get it to turn over by bridging the starter relay but wouldn't start.it seems to be the fuse box alot of time under hood needs replaced.

This is Glenn Davis. I have a 2007 Cobalt SS that was going through 3 starters in 2 1/2 years. I found out that the valve cover gasket was leaking oil down on the starter. Repaired the gasket and all seems to be fine until here lately. The starter drags when it's hot and the car sits 30 minutes or so. On a cool day no issues. I replaced the crank relay in the engine compartment and it drags a little now, but very seldom. Does it on long trips on a hot day. Otherwise, in town it starts just fine everytime. It could be a bad starter because it is reconditioned from O'Reillys. All the battery connections are tight and no loose cables. Anybody got any ideas on this one?

18,245

Considering your history with starter failures I would take it off and have it tested.

10

Try grounding the computer under the hood. The aluminum computer body already has a whole in it. 1/4 bolt and wire. Run other end of wire down to grounding lug below and infront. Make sure it too is clean and corrosion free. Worked for me. Same issue as what you are all saying. Well not the starter guy. He has a different problem.

i have a cobalt lt been driving it from a year now yesterday was parked outside a mall and came back it wasn't starting no crank nothing all the lights came up ac works light works but engine not starting after 20 mints it started it worked fine after that same thing happened very next day not started at first no crank but after 30 mints it started again and working fine but still don't wanna drive it until i find out any help ????

18,245

Check that battery connections are tight. Scan for trouble codes. Maybe load test the battery. Hopefully that will give you somewhere to start.

I have a 2007 Chevy cobalt. Replaced battery n had starter tested and it tested good.still wont start but it does make a clicking noise when u turn key backward to take it out.not sure...please help.all lights n radio work and windshield wipers work.no codes coming up on dash either.checked fuses they all seem to be good.there is one thing i noticed my check air bag light comes on when you move front passenger seat.not sure if that has anything to do with it not starting.

18,245

Airbag may or may not be part of the problem. Apparently there are air bag connections and wiring under the passenger seat that have been know to fail or give problems. I'd take the seat out, pull the carpet back and make sure everything is clean and dry and properly connected. Sounds like you may also have problems with the ignition switch itself or the wiring in and around the column. Do some trouble shooting in that area, or spend a few dollars at a shop that specializes in auto electrical issues. Electrical problems can be tricky to find and don't always trigger codes. A good electrically minded auto technician is worth his or her weight in shortbread cookies... because its Christmas. Good luck. Let us know what you find.
