Tranmission swap

Asked by Sean Nov 14, 2019 at 08:28 PM about the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Im getting ready to buy a 2006 pontiac grand prix 3.8l 4
speed automatic transmission. The previous owner say the
transmission is practically shot and will need replaced. I
already have a 2005 pontiac grand am 3.4l 4 speed auto, it
is wrecked. Would i be able to put the grand am tranny,
which i think is a 4t45e, into the grand prix which i think has
a 4t65e tranny, or should i be better off buying another
4t65e from the junkyard

Compare the tags on the two transmissions. If everything matches it will work. If not, it won't. Buying a used transmission is risky, especially a GM transmission which are known to be troublesome. If you go that route get a 30 day warranty or don't buy! Hope that helps! Jim
