Engine noise

Asked by PureHate May 24, 2018 at 02:21 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I start and drive my 2004 Grand Am GT with
the 3400 V6 it is nice and quiet until the temp
gauge goes up to 200- 210 degrees. Which seems
too hot to me. When it gets warmed up to that
temperature it has a sound of marbles in the
engine. The sound reminds me of shifting a
manual transmission to a higher gear too soon and
has the marbles in the oil pan sound. Or when a
motor gets too hot it has the same sounds. I'm not
sure what to do to try and fix the problem. Any
ideas or suggestions would be very helpful before I
start spending money on parts I don't need.

200 to 210 is normal operating temperature. I can't diagnose sounds over the internet so you should have a mechanic listen to your engine.

Sounds like it is literally water boiling over and out. Got too hot May be the thermostat. You should be able to put change it out. Do not ever open up radiator cap while engine is hot or running!!!! Also check where the radiator overflow is after driving, especially if you have heard it. Often you can see the overflow is so hot and maybe even bubbling inside the overflow container. Be careful, do not touch that either and the fluids may even be shooting out if major overheated. May even see it wet if it has done that under the hood. Do you have enough antifreeze in radiator. You need it in all weather, not just cold. After it is totally cooled completely down, check your radiator fluid level as well. Be sure there are no radiator leaks too. God bless
