99 Grand Am GT - loose transaxle output shaft

I'm trying to track down a vibration that seems to be coming from the front passenger side of my car (99 Grand Am GT 3.4L V6 with 4T45 transaxle) when driving at highway speeds, starting after about 15 minutes. Took the tire off and looked for anything obviously loose/warn/damaged. Only thing I noticed was that the CV joint connected to the transaxle has about 1/2" of play in the up/down and front/rear (of car) directions. I removed the CV axle and the splined shaft it mates with inside the transaxle seems to have comparable wobble. The drivers side has some wobble as well, but less than the passenger. Is this normal or could this be the source of the vibration?

I don't think thats normal at all , there shouldn't be any play like that at the tranaxle , had this car a while ? I'd fix it before I go down the highway and royally cheeseburger it .
