A/T stands for Automatic Transmission. The automatic transmission can be placed in different modes using this button. Example: Economy/Sport/etc.

The a/t button starts your vehicle in 2nd gear instead of 1st, to help start without as much power to the wheels on the snow or ice, presumably to help keep you from "breaking traction" and slipping as easily in slick conditions
