i have replaced fuel filter still code 44 what is next

i have 1990 gmc 5.0 getting code 44  seems like it is not getting fuel when problem
comes i can shut truck off and restrart it it clears up for a while then comes back  is it bad
fuel pump

Yes, from what you said it more than likely is fuel pump.

44 is a system lean code, you may want to check the fuel pump pressure and flow to verify that is the problem before dropping the fuel tank to replace the pump and strainer. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Is the PCV working properly?
