Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1991 Dodge Ram 150 Le Extended cab

Ok so my odometer does not work/count miles. It is stuck on 42k and doesn't move. There are some cables that are disconnected under the hood in the right side of the engine bay near the brake fluid container. Do any of these wires/cables need to be connected in order for the odometer to operate? And if this isn't my problem, then what do you think is keeping the odometer from working? Please give me any and all the information that you can. Also the speedometer and everything else in the dash works- just not the odometer. Thanks.

your odometer is run off of the speed gear on the truck, (the thing that measures speed for your speedometer) my guess is, is that the small gears on the actual odometer its self are broken, since its an analog dash plugging those wires in prolly wont do any thing, and my guess is since their unplugged the accesories they control prolly arent installed in the truck...... thats just my two cents on the situation

You didn't mention the speedometer so I'm assuming it's working Your odometer is electronic so the first thing to do is check the #12 fuse to make sure it hasn't blown. If it's not the fuse then the plastic gears running off the cable are probably broken or just worn off. They can be replaced by removing the cluster panel but they're not cheap.

It sounds like you had cruise control on your truck , those cables and wires plugged into a box called a transducer, and sounds like someone has removed it .

For the next person wondering?... Most old mopars with cruise setups will have their speedometer cables unplugged & a non working speedo because they all fail early. On the servo aka: Cruise Control one threaded port is marked "Transmission" for the cable running from its speed sensor on the transmission. The other servo port is where the cable going to your speedometer (head) in the dash goes. These servos fail early because moisture builds up inside so their contacts rust/corode OR its plastic gears inside them strip & lock up OR the Servo simply no longer keeps its vacuum built up OR yeah' its junk man..lol We used to be able to remove the two cables & install one long cable to bypass the servo so our speedo still operated. Still can if you dont have the elec speed sensor on your trans but most since mid 80's have one. After the speed sensor was added to trans if the servo stops working we can't just bypass it nor can we even fix our servo/Speedo because the parts are simply not available. Most servos found in junk yards already have or will soon fail also. They are junk and no corp ever cared enough to help us fix the speedo. Not even Dorman cares too. You can update all your gauges to a digital setup but those setups are rather pricey, especially for an old vehicle.
