We have a 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan and having a gas issue!

My husband tried to fill the van up abt 2wks ago but would only hold about 6 gallons so thinking he figures his mileage wrong (gas gauge doesn't work) but he says no and knows it should be empty or close to it! Today, my husband comes home, smells gas and checks it....it's leaking around the gas cap. He takes the gas cap off....gas comes POURING out of the tank! The van runs fine...no sputtering, no pinging noises....NOTHING! It runs like a champ! Our mechanic says he's never heard of this. Can anyone help? Thank you!!

Possibly...except that he put gas in about 4 days ago and it just started spilling gas yesterday. Had it happened on that day, I could see that being the case; however, because it happened 4days AFTER he put gas in, I'm thinking that may not be the cause but thank you for your response =)
