Is there anything I can do to keep my 2002 Ford Focus wagon from sliding in the back turning on snowy roads?

I have had my Focus 10 years and never had a driving problem in Florida.  I have moved to Colorado and was driving in very low temps and slushy roads and made a left hand turn, with a low pressure right front tire and fishtailed to the right.  I recovered alright but would a bit more weight in the rear of the car help the traction?  My best tires on are the back, but they are not snow tires.

Your ford focus is front wheel drive so i would think moving you better tires to the front would help, but winter tires would be best. Here are some more tips on winter driving: http://exchange.aaa.com/safety/roadway-safety/winter-driving-tips/

Michael is right. Put your best tires on the front. No weight is needed in the rear. All the weight of the engine and transmission are over the front drive wheels.
