the heat in my 2002 ford explorer stopped working and even when the heat is in the off position, if i turn the dial to hot, it just makes a thumping noise without the heat even being on. please help

when the heat is off, if I turn the dial to hot, without even turning the heat on, it makes a loud thumping noise. when I turn it to cold it stops. Also, the heat doesn't get hot at all. my transmission is failing, could this be the problem

Actuator motor out or blend door jammed or broken. Dash has to come out.
