I have a 2006 Ford Escape XLT V6 4WD my check engine light came on but I know I need an oil change too could that be it?

wondering with guestimates why my check engine light could have come on. I know I need an oil change. My SUV has been running fine there still aren't any tell tale signs for why it could have come on. Not over heating running fine. Not sure why
