how to ingage 4wl drive

tried putting regular shift in nutreal then shifted 4wl shift to 4wl high waited a minute couldn't tell if it was in what is the right way to ingage 4wl drive

In my 91 Tracker (5-speed) I stop, lock my hubs, shift transfer case from 2wd to neutral, then to 4wl. Seems to work just fine.
