Do u need to take out the rods to take out the transmission and transfer case?

What rods? shifting rods, possibly yes. Engine rods that connect to the pistons? No. If they are suggesting an engine tear down, really get a second opinion, then again a second opinion might be a good idea. Go to a reputable transmission shop like AAMCO not Bubba's BBQ,Bar and Transmission repair shop. If you want to spend a little more money, even take it to a Chevy dealer that repairs truck transmissions for an opinion and cost.
