1987 Ford e-350 RV, runs great then loses power, stutters, bangs, pops and stops running. What causes this?

I have a 1987 e-350 RV with 30,000 miles. Have replaced wiring harness, belts, hoses,
spark plugs, fluids, fuel filter. The engine is quiet & clean. But, when driving on trip, got
30 miles away & it started to bang & pop & not have power.  Found an ignition switch
cable not plugged; plugged & taped it.  Then drove about 100 miles.  Again, loss of
power, bang & popping. The shop duplicated the problem once but cannot again.  I
need this to take longer trips than 30 - 100 miles! What do I do?
