Have you researched this? It is a common problem with these engines. The chain guides fall apart so the timing chain jumps time. I don't see where this is an interference engine to have caused damage. What makes you think you need to replace the engine?

Have done research and I found both ways sometimes the timing chain that needed to be replaced only and other times the engine needed to be replaced. Have had about two different dealerships and they both told me the same thing . Took out the valves and did some other damage as so they are telling me . with the timing belt going do not know if it makes a difference for how fast my wife was driving it she was going down the interstate at 75 miles an hour if that's got a difference of what it does when it breaks . Thank you for your response. also I'm working with GM and the guy at the shop is also working with GM to see what they can do.

Sounds like what you say if it took out the valves, engine needs replacing. Hopefully they can do something for you since it has only 63,000 miles on it.

2012 has been using to much oil been reporting now for 2 yrs. I found out my timing chains r gone. This thing is only 6 yrs old! Gm is just dismissing it. The oil consumption . And timing chain. I'm pissed off! It's the equinox lt.

Ya mine is just as bad. I have the 12. Using to much oil and now my timing chains. Come on , only 6 yrs old. And it's costing me a fortune. Gm just pushed it away. Did u get anywhere? Ty

Did not get anywhere with GM. $5400 for a new motor. After the motor was put in, recieved a letter stating this year vehicle may use excessive oil and should get it checked. Called GM and told them it was a little to late for that, customer service said ok, is there anything else we can do for you. Not much help.

Also go to the GM website and go under recalls and put your Vin number in and see what comes up. I did that and with the customer service rep at first, and nothing came up until after the fact. Once I kept calling, then they sent me a letter saying that was included

My 2012 Chevy Equinox has been using a lot of oil as well & the timing chain just went 12/28/17 I’ve had nothing but issues & more issues with my Equinox. Whenever there is an issue the dealership couldn’t find it. Of course it’s out of warranty. I contacted an attorney. If anyone would like to contact me in reference to this please do. I can give you my attorney’s info if it will help anyone out. Thanks & take care. Desiree desireeforbes@rocketmail.com

My 2012 Equinox has been sitting at dealer for 2 1/2 weeks. The timing chain broke and took out my Cylinder head and the estimate to fix both is $4100. I waited two weeks for GM Customer Care to tell me there is nothing they can do. Not even 6 years old and only 5 months past warranty date. Seems fishy with all the problems I have been reading about on the internet with others experiencing the same type of difficulties.

I have a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. Excessive oil consumption and the timing chain broke and damaged my engine. Customer care wanted us to pay $400-$500 to get it diagnosed. Then said we are past our warranty. This is a known issue with the 2011-2012. I am beyond pissed off. Not sure wether to put another engine, repair it or sell it as is.

We have a 2012 Equinox we bought new. We had the same high oil consumption issue, here is resource to take to your dealership: https://gm.oemdtc.com/7458/16118-special- coverage-adjustment-excessive-engine-oil-consumption-2012-chevrolet-equinox-gmc- terrain This special adjustment coverage boosts to 7.6 years/120,000 miles for the issue. Ours had to have piston/rings replaced. Shortly after we had same issue, and turned out a ring had cracked so dealership had to do another complete rebuild. 4 months later and we are currently dealing with a timing chain issue, apparently it jumped one spot out of time, $850.00 dealership bill. We are currently working with GM Customer care to get this figured out. Good luck. Stay firm and be the squeaky wheel with these guys.

Unfortunately GM told me I do not fall under that category, they told me my car was not under that recall. timing chain went out, took out the Pistons and all that. needed a new engine. week after new motor put in, GM sent me a letter telling me I should get the car checked for excessive oil consumption. told him that was a little too late, since the engine was already toast. he said there was nothing they could do about it.

I just found out my 2011 chevy equinox engine needs to be replaced. I have 64,000 miles on it. I am trying to find out what is the best way to deal with this issue. They (the dealer) told me it will cost 6200.00 to fix. I will never ever buy another Chevy ever. I do not know what I am going to do.

We have 2 Equinox vehicles; 2013 was a new vehicle, the timing chain broke after 150k Miles. Both have use excessive oil usage and thankfully traded the 2012 back in. Guess we traded it in just in time. The 2013 Equinox? May just have to voluntarily surrender this vehicle since GM is not backing up their vehicles.

Ive got a story! Bought a 2011 Equinox with approx 140k on it. Drove fine for a week then the timing chain issue happened. Took it in, repaired it. Have had oil consumption issues since day one. Timing chain has streched out for the second time within two years and within 0k miles....So I am faced again with repairing for another $2500

You can call GMC, they have something where the dealers will cover certain damages done to your vehicle if you can prove it has an oil consumption issue. Call GMC customer service they can help you.

I miss my Ford Ranger that had 323,000 miles in it, I had an accident bought a brand new 2011 Equinox Always kept up the service ,put 189,000 miles on it, The dealership serviced this vehicle last month, I have been complaining about excess oil consumption for some time. I never researched this topic. Tuesday started up Betty Blue. My wife said what's that sound, now I hear the sound of the cash register at the Dealership, over $6,500 with Labor to have a rebuilt Engine installed with 3 yr/ 100,000 mile warranty. Now the Dealership called and said We need to pay for the shipping to have the Engine Delivered. Nickle and Dime us to the max. We are currently trying to sell and buy a different home, so we can't have another payment. I have known there was a problem for some time. We had the rough idling for a couple of years, and were always told that it was a normal sound. Integrity and Honesty should be part of a business model. Will not buy a Chevy again, I don't care how good their new commercials are looking. Ok , done venting

Coalboss... I'm having same issues, but not one can find out the problem. All that is posted today, I'm having issues with. 65,000 miles and its a headache. I've paid lots of money this passed month and the car is still doing the same thang. I had an 03 code which was cam selnoid replaced, misfired, found rock in rotor, need master cylinder and booster. It idol up high and go low, feel like the transmission is slipping. I've been to all these shops and no one knows what the problem is on my 2011 Equinox. I'm so dang sad. I don't know what else to do but get out of it..

I’ve bought new 2010 Chevy equinox and maintained it. Had the first problem with fuel leaking into to oil. That was fixed under warranty. Now at 148000 miles I have loss of power and was just told would need timing chain as it has stretched. The oil consumption started along with the problems. When this all started I then read the forums and GM knows about the problems but I have not seen a fix yet. Not sure it’s worth fixing or even buying another GM or Chevy vehicle in the future. Frustrating that with so many cars with the same problem that GM would just make it right to keep customers.

I have a 2010 Equinox. I have had so many issues with this car. It has been making a rattle sound almost like a Diesel engine. My husband told me when he changed my oil that it was a quart low but there isn’t a leak. I took it to my mechanic today because the check engine light came on with a knock sensor code. He told me it was the chain that needed to be replaced. He did some research and found a special coverage adjustment issued by GM. If your 2010-2011 Equinox is less than 10 years old and under 120,000 miles they will replace it plus a bunch of other things. The problem is mine has 150,000 and the dealerships I talked to told me I would have to come out of pocket for the repairs. The crazy thing is this “recall” is not made public. You have to find it yourself and it is usually too late! Google search-special coverage adjustment 12313C. All the info is there. I will never buy another Chevy again. In the past 2 years I have spent over $2000 in repairs that were not regular maintenance...which I do also!

I got the 2011 Terrain as a certified used for the fuel economy and because it was relatively new. (<30,000 miles when I bought it.) I was in college at the time and the reported fuel economy more than made up for the difference in payment from my last vehicle. I soon realized that the fuel economy wasn't what they reported. With perfect driving, maximizing the miles per gallon, I could get it up to an average of 29-30mpg on the highway. With any level of normal driving it quickly dropped to 24-26mpg, if not lower. But this was still about double what my last vehicle got, so ok I do most of my own basic maintenance, and I don't use cheap products. For oil changes, I use full synthetic with a extra guard filter and change the oil between 3,500-5000 miles, depending on my schedule. If I ever hit 5,000 miles, and don't have time, that's when I take it in to whatever quick lube shop will get it done the soonest afternoon I have available, usually to Wal-mart and I get groceries while I wait. I haven't had any major problems with my vehicles since I started consistently taking care of them myself, about 10 years now. My timing guides broke at only 79,000 miles! I was at just over 5,000 miles since my last oil change and have the paperwork to prove it since I have been particularly busy lately. The dealership told me that there was practically no oil left in my engine. Then the dealership told me the cheapest repair was to replace the engine, and that corporate would not cover my fix because they could not do an oil consumption test now that the engine won't run. It's going to cost me $7,000 to get my vehicle fixed, which I must have to commute to work 30 miles away. I don't have $7,000 and I may lose my job if I can't find the money or a way to finance it by the time they get it fixed this week. This is unacceptable. I'm pissed. If you are too, come take it to them with me! I created a facebook group which you can find here below. Please come tell your story and then take post a link on twitter @GMC with the hashtag #GreataMericanCompanyNoLonger https://www.facebook.com/groups/174877126561662/ And repost that link to their twitter feed and on their facebook page every day that you are paying for their lemon of an engine. All stories posted will be offered to any legal team willing to take up this suit as well.

I found a lawyer to take my case. GM keeps saying there's nothing wrong with my car. This lawyer is out of Dallas. I'm in Lubbock, so if anyone need information let me know. I got a letter from his office when I first purchase the car. He said the car or check equinox was a lemon and if I needed help to call and I did a month ago. I turned in all my repair receipts and I don't have to pay anything. GM wouldn't help.

Our 2011 chevy equinox died on us at a stop sign about a month ago. I got it started again, and it died going 15 MPH in city traffic. I was able to get it going again, and took it directly to our local dealership. They diagnosed it with a bad timing sensor. We got it back, and seemed to run fine. 2 weeks later we couldn't get the vehicle started in our driveway and had to get it towed to the same dealer. Now the engine is destroyed and needs replaced due to all the valves being bent. I referenced this forum and all the special coverage adjustments I found on line, and asked why nothing else was checked due to the high volume of issues with timing chain / oil blow by and ring issues. They said all that had checked out on my engine. I was very vocal / upset with the dealer, and the best they offered was 45% off a Chevy reman engine. This will still cost me $4,400 out of pocket on a 7 yr old car with 102K miles. They did offer a 3 yr 100K mile warranty for the replacement engine at no cost, but this is still a slap in the face. I'm forced to have this fixed as my trade in value is now $1K if the vehicle isn't repaired. Totally unacceptable.

I have a 2010 Equinox with 80,000 miles on it. Replace cam, intake, and trottle sensors. Cause that what computer was reading. Didn't work took to shop now I need to replace my timing. Going to cost about 1,500 dollars. I will talk him down on labor costs. But I am so disapointed in this car. Will repair and trade it off for something else.

I would like to know about the lawsuit as well. Harryprovorsejr@yahoo.com My 2011 Equinox lt was recommended to have the timing chain replaced today while having new brakes and rotors put all around and I forgot the name of the brackets connected to the struts, none the less, $520 is not horrible, but another $600 is not in my budget right now to replace the timing chain. The mechanic pointed out to a similar 2011 equinox and said "that has less miles than yours and he ended up replacing the engine because of the same issue". He's been a straight shooter with me the last decade, never runs up extra nonsense during repairs and charges a decent hourly rate, so I have trust that he wasn't looking for extra work.

You all need to contact the The Lemon Attorney out of Dallas. The is wrong for us to purchase cars and have all these issues and GM knew the cars were Lemon. The extra warranty is a waste of money. Yes, I'm still dealing with car issues and I think is the same as everyone else.

If any of you are on social media. Facebook has a group out there called Terrain- Equinox oil consumption recall. There are lawyers on ther that you send your information too. On August 28th, they were going to GM with filings in thirty states. All I sent them was year of car, vin number and small description of the issue, also state vehicle was purchased in

GM didn't help me with anything. They keep saying there's nothing wrong with car. I got a lawyer. This is really stressful. The rotors, oil consumption, car sounds like truck. Stop on brakes and the steer wheel shakes. This is after I fix the brakes and Cam selnoid (sp) over $1800 and still the same problem. Turn air conditioner on and u can really hear the sound of truck. Its really sad General Motors are not recalling ALL the equinox when they know there's a problem.

My 2013 Equinox ( I purchased October of 2012) Cut off yesterday at a stop sign and had to be towed to the dealership where I purchased it and did do the last oil change. Today I was told $8700 for a new engine mount. The Service rep went on to say that There was no oil on the dip stick which indicated it was at least 2 quarts low. The crank case had no oil in it therefore my timing belt broke and caused the other damage. I had 300-500 remaining miles until my next oil change and 4% oil life remaining I was taking the vehicle to have the oil changed in 4 days. My car never gave any indication that I was low on oil pressure nor have I had any indication that there were any mechanical issues. John my service rep went on to say that my vehicle wouldn't tell me when it was low on oil it only checks Oil Pressure he went on to say they could not find any oil leaks. I asked how this could happen since they had done the last oil change and I wasn't over due. John also stated that at my last oil change the technician indicated that the vehicle hadn't lost any oil. So in the time from one oil change to another with out any rough engine sounds or oil leaks or any indicator lights showing any engine problem this is what happens. I am beside myself with frustration I do have an extended warranty not through the dealership but the Service Rep is saying even though he hasn't called he knows it will not be covered when they are told about the low oil. He continues to tell me that it was the lack of oil volume that caused this not lack of Oil pressure therefore I would not of received an indicator light. I'm sorry but the amount of oil which equals the volume would then create the amount of pressure???? So not only do I have the same problem as many have mentioned but they are trying to place the blame on incorrect vehicle maintenance which means my warranty will not cover the repairs. On top of it all I still owe a few thousand dollars. I have no way of paying for these repairs and my car payment. I didnot even realize that this was a known issue I now know why they are trying to place blame on me. I don't even know what to do I was going to call GM but this seems like a waste of time. I guess I will go through the motions and also see if Virginia has any suits against GM.

5 people found this helpful.

@iamcrabtree what was the outcome of your issue. Seeing as though you and I are in the same area with the same exact situation, is it worth to fix the vehicle especially when I am so close to paying the vehicle off?

20

$7800 GM wouldn't cover any of the cost. GM knows there is an issue and will not do a recall. I did receive a new warranty. Big deal.

20

I just had a problem with my engine locking up on my 2012 equinox which only has 66,500 miles on it. The dealer said the timing guide broke causing the timing chain to jump which lead to breaking the valves on the engine. I have an extended warranty but do I qualify for this lawsuit as well ?

Same issue here folks. 132K on the car. For the most part "dealer kept". 1 quart of oil every 2 weeks & now the chain jump a tooth (miraculously the thing still runs). 12K on the loan remains. I'm 43. I have owned nothing but GM cars my entire life w/ for the most part good experienecs. But in this case, this ends it. Just bought the wife a NEW CVR. Honda from now on!!

The dealer pretended they didnt really know why and why would i want them to do the work to find out because that would cost me more money???? what??? so now i have NO CAR. They acted like they were telling me i needed brakes? My 6 year old car just died? thye didnt say anything about the oil issue??? Unfortunately GM doesn't care about the lives they are putting at risk or the expense they are unfairly placing on so many families. $8000 quoted for repair. And the car was $3000 away from being paid off. No help from GM but the dealership will gladly offer new Traverse with a brand new car loan to go with it. And roll the negative equity from their crappy Equinox into the new note. SMH.

I have a 2012 Chevy equinox with 2.4 liter ecotec, it's now sitting in a parking lot of a gm dealership please send info on possible lawsuit. jsb4x4dodge@gmail.com I have records on hand and only 89k miles

Basically the same situation here with a 2012 Volt with 44,000 miles. The gas engine on this thing only has a little over 3000 miles on it. It's 6 years old and uses the electric only most of the time so very low miles on the gas side. After 3 weeks at the dealer they told me the timing chain broke and it will be a $6800 repair, which is not covered by warranty and Chevy is unwilling to help out. This is my first and last Chevy.

I have a 2012 equinox and today while I was driving to work my dashboard lit up saying engine power reduced. Pulled off to the side of the road and the engine died. Had it towed to the dealership to find out it was leaking oil while driving it this morning. Mind you no oil stains in my driveway and I just had the oil changed 2 weeks ago and was fine. Was also told the timing chain was not keeping time correctly with the engine. Was pretty much told the engine was toast and need an new one. The car just hit 100k. New GM engine 7k. Very irritated that it’s one thing after another. Last time it was the sensor in the engine when it died the first time. Does anyone have info on the lawsuit? If so send it to HSolar21@gmail.com I’ve only had this car since 9/2018!

In May 2013 I purchased a used 2011 Equinox with 30K miles. In Nov 2014 using excessive oil had engine rings, pistons, gaskets and timing chain replaced. $2000 In Jun 2016 I had the transmission rebuilt. $4900 Now in 2019, need AGAIN engine work on rings, pistons, main seal, gasket and timing chain. $1800 This time I have to pay because I no longer have extended warranty. I mean who needs one after you've already had the engine and transmission rebuilt? I guess me.....

I have a 2014 Traverse with 3.6 VVT engine making a terrible noise. Chevy dealer kept for a week and told me they could not repair it. They would not fix a safety issue concerning airbag deployment either. Car has 89000 miles on it. Apparently the power train warranty is worthless on these vehicles. Would like to know more about class action suit. hdurrett1@yahoo.com

Have a 2011 Equinox got it used 68,000 miles oil was black even though changed 1000 miles ago, changed it and it was still black gritty and dirty, changed it again in 2000 miles did it 4 times and finally looked decent, now changing every 4000 to 5000 miles, ignoring the oil life thing that says good to10,000 to12,000. These came with top of the line full Synthetic oil and filter, folks just go the cheap route Quick lube, Wally world the engine gets sludged and the chain tensioner fails, I use 10 w 40 that stops oil usage, leakage. Very sure this came from a rental fleet so probly never got an oil change in the first 40 to 50 thousand miles. oil change every 4000 saves you 6 grand for a motor

20

UPDATE At 92000 I heard a short rattle at start up that went away, removed the top cover ( U Tube videos) the chain was loose but the guides were good, Got a new tensioner and put it in BUT the chain slipped as I did (probably need a hook tool to keep tension on the left guide) I had to take off the bottom cover (u tube again) so put in a new chain (the old chain was the same length so probably would have been fine) it was good because there was sludge that needed to be cleaned out, think the oil usage is due to stuck rings due to crude and sludge. Folks talk about getting a different make but frankly if you don't change your oil and filter on these modern engines with VVT you will have problems

Our 2010 Equinox has been sitting for 2 months now because it is draining oil faster than I can burn through a tank of gas. It stalled out in the city a few times before I could get it to the mechanic. It needs new timing chains which was a $1500 quote. They can replace the timing chains BUT the oil is a completely separate issue with the pistons. Therefore we are being told we need a brand new engine. NOPE! Of course our warranty just ran over last year. Has anyone heard back about this lawsuit action through email? Should we scrap the SUV and cut our losses? I would like more information if someone is monitoring this feed. Chelsea - clnbuczynski17@hotmail.com

My 2011 Chevy Malibu with 2.4 Ecotec just broke a timing chain guide. 67,000 miles. Was getting the P0016 and P0017 Crank / cam correlation codes. Man am I ticked!! I bought this car with 18,000 miles always changed oil. GM will do nothing!! I have owned a 2001 Saturn L200 that broke a timing chain with 106,000 miles and crashed the head. GM would do NOTHING!! I had a Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass Sierra in the 90's. Both of these cars had the outer harmonic balancer ring just come un-glued and fall off! GM did nothing. This IS the last straw for me , I am now focused on HONDA who actually cares about RELIABILITY!!!!!

Please send lawsuit info. Having same issues as everyone else. Firefightermurphy@yahoo.com

Thank God I found this forum! 2012 Equinox 58,xxx miles, still under warranty. Had this car almost 3 years.. check engine light on, code pulls cam shaft sensor... changed sensors... light still on... 2nd opinion informed me of the issues with the timing chain and engine burning through oil...Called Chevy corporate, they are escalating my case to a senior member, just so I can make an appointment to have the vehicle diagnosed... smh Can’t get my car inspected because the check engine light is on... Smh... joined the Facebook group! we shall see what happens

Please send me info about the class action lawsuit. My email is trevorsampson@hotmail.com. 2011 Chevy traverse with p0008 code so I’m thinking I’m in the same boat as the rest of you with the timing chain issue. I can’t beli how many people are having the same problem. This is criminal what Chevy is doing to families who trust them enough to spend their hard earned money on these vehicles with a well known defect in the engines.

please send information about the lawsuit. deekny67@yahoo.com my elderly neighbors 2012 Chevy Equinox with 98k just died and was told engine seized. Mechanic basically said 8K to fix so they are handing it in to him for 600.00 and now they have no vehicle.

Hopefully someone is still responding here. Please send me the lawsuit info. Having ALL the same problems with my 2012 Equinox. Still can’t fathom how GM says burning a quart of oil every 4K miles is within reason. Now this timing belt thing. Mike.bray.pdx@gmail.com

Please send me the lawsuit info as well, I have a 2012 Equinox with 68,000, using a quart every 1500 miles, and had a timing chain error pop up today. Thanks! krlknutson@yahoo.com

Please send me info of lawsuit as well. Amorajoy@gmail.com. 2011 equinox same problem. So disappointing

I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox with only 74,000 miles and was burning oil, did the oil consumption test for months and was told I would most likely quality for the repair, and then all of a sudden I did t have an issue with oil consumption. Then check engine light came on, took it to the dealer and they told me my engine was shot, timing chain was broken and there was metal all throughout my engine. They told me it would cost me $8,000.00 to replace the engine. GM knows there’s an issue and won’t fix this problem. I’m beyond frustrated! Who do I contact for the lawsuit? Tef2@comcast.net

I'd like to get some lawsuit information as well. My email is: dandcedney@gmail.com I have a 2012 and it's constantly stalling on me. I haven't had it checked yet, but plan on it next week on one of my days off. Scared of what they'll find.

I would like information on lawsuit... I have the same issue 2014 timing chain broke and need to replace the engine... The crazy thing is that it's under warranty and GM is blaming me because I didn't change the oil as frequently as they think... The cost to replace the engine with labor is 7,800... They new this was a problem... I want to be involved in a lawsuit... jeremyrlilly@gmail.com with any info

boyyee44@gmail.com - please forward any information pertaining to said lawsuit. 2012 chevy equinox, excessive oil consumption, timing chain jumped, broke a couple rockers and bent a couple valves, chewed up a couple spark plugs, further internal damage expected upon further investigation. Vehicle had regular oil change and was well maintained before issues started. Buyers of this vehicle should be ready, willing, and able to replace timing assembly before 60,000 miles just to be safe.

2010 Equinox here. Bought used at 120,000 km. Previous owner replaced timing chain at 60,000 km. Now the care is 135,000 km and the timing chain is again stretched and needs replacement. Seems like its going to be a $4,000 (CAD) cost every 60,000 km or so. If there is any info about this lawsuit please post here. Hopefully it carries weight all the way North.

My 2013 Equinox stalled at a stop sign yesterday, was able to get it home but then it completely died in the driveway, acted like it wanted to start but wouldn't turn over. Had to get it towed to a dealership who said that that timing belt jumped took a tine with it and completely wreaked the engine so now that needs to be replaced at the tune of $6500. I still owe $5,000 on the car. I am at a loss and looks like 2013 wasn't included in the recent class action settlement. I am basically screwed and will never buy Chevy or GMC ever again.

My 2013 Equinox timing chain just went out on me. Dealership told me it will be $2000 to fix. Says he sees this happening with vehicles 100K miles and over. It's not worth fixing to me when it only has a $3K trade-in value. Going to stay away from GM from now on. Sad, I purchased it new off the lot only 6 years ago and only have put 70K miles on it.

have 2012 equinox six cylinder. at a stop light, engine just stopped running and could not start. had it taken to chevy dealership and was told engine is seized. lucky me, i took out a chevy protection plan that is a platinum and silver coverage. re manufactured gm engine cost was over 4500 dollars and would cost at least eight grand to fix my vehicle. so it may have cost me 1800 bucks for the chevy protection plan coverage for two years, but it is paying for everything to fix my equinox. other wise. i would be like everyone else that has the same engine problem. and of all things. i am a retired gm employee that trusted the company that i worked for, for a quality vehicle.

So it won't cover Now I'm lost and need help to cover my car that we just got 2years ago, used, because of our financial situation.

at traffic light and engine just stopped running. had it owed to house and then to dealership to have it taken care of. best thing, had it in my mind to purchase chevy platinum and silver coverage for 1800 for two years of coverage. will lucky me that i did. only had 58000 on vehicle and all oil changes and mantinace was done by dealership. was questioned by chevy coverage and requested all paperwork on what was done by dealership. well they could not find anything to quibble about and replace the engine and also catalitic converter. 9000 plus for engine and 1800 for conveter. worse thing about this is. i am a gm retiree with 30 years service and to have this happen to me, is an embassment for the stupidity of gms engineers that built this engine. they should of kept buicks 3800 engine. oldsmobile i had is still going at over 200,000 miles gave it to my son to use. real shame of what our companies are selling to the american public.

Please send info on law suite to gavrocks@bellsouth.net All of the above has happen to my daughter's 2012 Equinox

I have a 2012 Chevy Equinox with 140k on it and I bought this car just over 2 years ago(08/17). Every month I had to change the oil because the oil was burning so much that when I put in 5 quarts of oil withing 30 days I couldn't fill up a tea cup with the oil remaining in the engine. Well 1 day I drive to drop off the old ball and chain to work (.5 miles) and then I drive back home and park not knowing that will be the last time the car ever turns on(11/19). I had to have it towed to the mechanic only for the mechanic to tell me that the car has no compression and won't start. He wouldn't give me an estimate on the repairs and just simply said just have it taken to the junkyard for parts........

Could someone please send me the info on this lawsuit. Pjscanzani@gmail.com. My wife’s 2012 equinox timing chain stretched and skipped. They told me it was due to years of poor maintenance... I do oil changes regularly. And have been working with my mechanic about it burning oil. Had no clue about the warranty and now it’s too late. Dealer wants $8415 for an engine. That’s more then the car is worth. They refuse to put a new chain in but haven’t verified that the engine is junk. Still have a loan can’t afford to put an new engine in. Idk what to do.

I am very pleased with the Ruddell Dealership out of Port Angeles Wa. When I first presented our Oil Consumption issues here a couple of years ago, the dealership we bought the car from brand new-Koenig Chevrolet and Subaru- also from Port Angeles had been lying to us for over two years about the oil consumption by stating that was normal...At some point I am sure with our initial complaints and piles of others locally, they lost their Chevrolet franchise and only sell Subaru's now...Ruddell was the GMC dealership and acquired all the local Chevy warranties. Ours included. They did what the MOCO instructed with this issue, which ultimately resulted in three complete engine tear downs to point of failure, two rebuilds (pistons and rings etc) and at our expense a timing chain and two sensors. Well, the problem was never remedied. Not the dealerships fault that Chevy put out a complete fail motor, but there was some frustration on all of our parts to get this done. Well, the original problem was noted by us when the car still had 66k on it and now, over 4 years later of dealing with this, the car has 90+k on it and has never stopped consuming oil. I had resigned myself to topping the oil off so to avoid my wife being stranded again in a distant city. Well, took it in for scheduled oil change and it was almost dry again. Dealership stepped up big time. Service Rep who has been with us the whole time, took the bull by the horns. They tore the engine down and found a bent rod, cracked spark plug and a bad ring. The dealership made some calls and we were approved for a brand new engine. Yes, a brand new engine, no cost to us...well, there are some other components that are not covered they recommended change why they have it out ($180.00). I can not explain the change of fortune on this for us other than we were on the dealership religiously from the start, we were on with GM's Customer Satisfaction constantly and I did a lot of research, which led me to the service memorandum which granted excessive oil consumption issues a greater warranty (122000 or 7 yrs). I am hoping the "New Motor" will not suffer the same issues...My advice to you ecotec Chevy- GM owners with this issue, get to know your dealerships service people, if they dick you around, call the MOCO immediately. Do not wait. stay with it. Don't accept no. We also have always had our oil changed at the dealership so there was no question on us using the wrong oil or other "Warranty cancelling concerns". And if you are just getting in to this problem, demand your dealership start an oil consumption test, it starts the process of the warranty. Good luck.

Not Happy!!!! Bought my 2012 Equinox in Feb 2020., 145,000 miles. First Oil change (before due date), BONE DRY?? No oil light, no warning! Fast forward until 3/4/21. Driving down road, loud knocking, car dies! Towed to shop. Timing chain broke, valves warped, no oil!!!! No oil light, no warning!! Diagnosis: replace motor!! Would it qualify for lawsuit?

1 people found this helpful.
30

To be clear the lawsuit is for leaking piston rings it’s not enough to say you were out of oil or even have proof that there was no oil. You have to be able to prove specifically that the oil consumption is due to the piston rings. We didn’t qualify for the lawsuit even though we had 2 different garages backing us. I ended up rebuilding my wife’s engine myself after it died around 36,000 miles, since we still had a loan on it. I replace the oil pressure timing chain tensioner with a spring actuated one, replace the guide built with a much heavier lug. And replaced with new piston rings. After getting all new parts, gaskets, and re-machining the head it runs like new. I make sure oil changes are done religiously.

40

I need the information about the lawsuit against GM regarding the timing chain on my 2012 Equinox. Engine has to be replaced and just bought it used 7 months ago. 133, 000 miles. I still owe 6k on it. I need GM to replace the motor on their dime. Please advise. My email is lou.iandoli77@ gmail.com.
