my 2009 forester is knocking and a very expensive used engine, i did a little
research and heard that a 2.5 out of a 2005 outback is a direct swap is this
true

Yes, but you'd be far better off with the variable valve design introduced in 2006; using an '05 may require swapping the ECU and other bits, so i wouldn't do it. OTH you can use the '05 BLOCK, but swapping heads would be a lot more work...also because you should then engage a machine shop to test the heads' integrity and flatness. Stick with a VVT motor.
