1989 Civic Hatchback Won't Start

Asked by mezmeryzd1 Aug 23, 2019 at 01:23 AM about the Honda Civic Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1989 Honda Civic hatchback, automatic trans. The person I bought
it from said someone had attempted to steal it so it had to be started with a
screwdriver. (I have the title so it's all legit)I have been driving it like that for
close to 8 months with not a single problem. Went to start it the other day, it
still had some tension when trying to turn it with screwdriver, but absolutely
no cranking at all, no dash lights, nothing.  I bought a whole new ignition
switch with the part that the key goes into and new key. Installed it correctly
and still....nothing. no dash lights, no clicking like you hear normally when
you turn the key to 1st position, no motor sounds at all. The key turns all the
way like it should and the only thing I know for sure is my battery is good. I
dont know how to test all the other things like starter, alternator, coil, relay,
etc. because I am just a girl with no mechanical knowledge and no mechanic
friends and limited funds.  Any suggestions, advice, tips, help etc that
anyone can offer would be appreciated more than you know!  Thanks for
reading.

Hi!! Thank you for replying! Not sure what you mean by "after all I've done". I bought a whole new ignition switch, the housing and the key and lock. You are saying my new parts could be damaged? I really don't think they could be .. I was very careful installing it and it was all one piece basically so I never came in direct contact with the switch itself. I am desperate to get this fixed though, please elaborate on what you mean.. :) Thanks so much!
