oil cap not in place properly when car running oil has gone everywhere

First thing to do is check the dipstick and add any necessary oil to the engine. Secondly I would buy some engine degreaser and give the engine and everything under the hood a good cleaning. Be careful not to spray water directly onto wire connectors or coils.
