Cold start problem, `automatic choke stuck

Asked by Craig Feb 19, 2017 at 09:10 AM about the Ford Bantam

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1600i bantam and it has developed a problem whilst being unused - it
seems to have the automatic choke stuck open, so coldstart. The car idles but
is extremely rich with black fuel smoke when you rev it. Revving it high also
does not work and it cuts out when the revs lower.

This Bantam is the Mazda B6 based engine. This could be a problem with the Vain Air Flow meter. The first thing you can do is to clear any fault codes in the computer box. To perform this. Ignition on Acc, Remove the ROOM light fuse and apply the brake pedal for 20 seconds. Release the brake pedal and refit the fuse. Even if the fault is rectified, if there is a fault code, the system assumes there is still a fault code. It could also be the vain airflow meter spring is too soft or broken. This is located below the sealed airfow meter cover.
