1977 MGB starting issues

I'm having trouble keeping the engine running after starting when the engine is
cold of just cool after setting for a bit. I usually start cold with a few "pumps" of
the gas...the engine starts but requires me to quickly pump the gas pedal to
keep it going for 30 sec to a minute...after that it will settle down and
idle...further, after driving and warmed up the idle is excessive.
