my 1998 c280 has a crank but no start problem what could it be

I changed the battery everything was fine the next day i went to start it and it
would crank but not start what could the problem be

These funny cars sometimes 'forget' the keys after you change e battery (but happened right away not like in your case). Happened sometime ago with a e320 same years 98 or 99. Do you have spark? Try with the other key if you don't have spark. Also, if no spark could be a crank shaft sensor. If you have spark could be the fuel pump.
