You know there are many recalls for that year avalanche.. Even a fuel system, gasoline recall. So you should check and see if that effected you. Just a thght.

I experience this with my Jeep Cherokee. I have determined that the anti0drain back system has failed and the lines are empty. The fuel pump has to purge air before the fuel reaches the engine. It has been our practice to just turn on the key and count to 5. Then engage the starter. Works great and way cheaper then the repair!

You can shut it off and try and start it back up and it will still take 2 or 3 times. And some times when it starts it runs rough for maby 2 to 3 seconds then every things fine and as long as it's running it never acts like it has a lack of fuel

I put a new Delphi fuel pump ($267 at local part store) and new fuel filter on and my Avalanche still takes 4 or 5 sec to start every other time..so its not the fuel pump or filter!

My 2002 Avalanche does this too but the fuel guage needle drops to empty, the idiot light says no fuel, then after about 5 seconds there's a whirring noise from the dash area, everything returns to normal, & it starts fine.
