how to get tail lights to turn off after engine is turned off

My 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe tail lights will not turn off after engine is turned off.  Has anyone had this problem.  I just now disconnected the battery.

ok, I will definitely try to do that. Thank you so much, Jim, for your prompt response. I am female, age 74, and used to do my own tune up on the older cars but the newer ones are a different ball game.
