68 Volkswagon Beetle

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I know a guy that is an amazing rat rod racer and knows everything about anything
when it comes to cars. He fixed up a 68 beetle with new seats, full roll cage, and
put a new engine with only 200 miles on it that has double carburetors and has
twice the HP of a stock beetle. Knowing his expertise I assume everything is solid
and sound. Any idea at all what price would be good. He says 3900 is his absolute
bottom dollar.

68 is not really a desireable year for vw's. anything 67 and older would bring more money. without the motor specs the claim of double horsepower is debateable. if car is rust free (check the heater channels!), car is worth around 700. now throw in motor (without details??) 2000. interior is cheap 500, roll cage (depends on how solid and welds) 150. i wouldn't pay more than 3500. now if the motor is built right (again need details) price goes up. did he redo the transaxle? if not you better figure another grand in for a new built unit within 6 months! how bout brakes? stock drums work ok, but if your gonna be rippin around you will want (need) disc brakes on the front. there is 400 bux.
