VW bug gearbox locked up

Asked by GuruVRF5W Sep 09, 2018 at 11:11 AM about the 1966 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,

I have a 1966 VW bug, tried to drive it this morning
and when I started the car, I was unable to shift it
into any gear (reverse included). When I try to put it
in reverse, it makes a grinding noise. I am unable to
put it in any gear. When I turn the car off, I am able
to touch all gears (reverse included).

It locks up on me for some reason. Never has
happened before.

Sounds like the clutch or maybe clutch cable, you can remove the pedals to check the pedals come out easily depending on rust

The whole pedal Assy comes out by removing several bolts you can see one bolt in the picture you will see the clutch cable and throttle cable pull on the cable, if it comes out it's bad it will be real obvious not a bad job to replace if I remember right if the cable is good bad clutch

Thank you Mike. I’ll likely reach out to a mechanic as I’m not super handy with this sort of thing. I appreciate the insight!
