Extended warranty

Question type: General

My warranty is almost up--to me it seems reasonable to purchase the extended warranty--seems that is something does go wrong, the repairs can be really expensive.  Does anyone have any suggestions about extended warranties for this make model?

Most of the extended warranties you can purchase are completely bogus. For one thing, they require you to have ALL maintenance, down to oil and air filter changes, done and documented at a mechanic. Then you have to keep the receipts to prove that you had this done in the event that something does go wrong that might be covered (very few repairs are completely covered). As a service advisor I saw first hand what a scam these are. If I were you, I'd take the money you would have spent on one of these (typically $1500-2k) and put it aside in a savings account in case of a repair. Very few repairs aside from an engine or trans replacement will approach that amount of money so you will be OK.

There are internet sources that will let you purchase a warranty--but 2-3K; I bought one for my Windstar and did end up never needing it. You have to search, but you can get one. Thanks for the reply!

I did buy one for my 98 Windstar--I did end up not needing it as the ones you can buy are only good for 100K. You are right--the extends don't cover much--I forgot about that! Good idea about putting the purchase price for the EW into savings. That's solved; but the thing I worry about never having owned a Volvo--seems like the repairs would be ridiculous! Thanks for the great reply!

Do not buy after market warranties unless they are offered by the manufacturer. I would say that 90 percent of the claims are denied at the dealerships I have worked at. If it's a manufacturer extended warranty, then yes get it. Believe me it helps. When it comes to the manufacture extended warranty, all we do is run the number of the part that failed against a database and if it comes up as covered, then we do the repair. Now, there are some instances that we do not honor the repair if and only if there is excessive abuse. One I can remember was this truck came in with a locked up engine. First thing I checked was the oil filter because the vehicle only had about 30,000 miles. Well I turned out that this person had never done an oil change. I would say yes if it's offered through you manufacturer.
