91 Buick Riviera. transmission slipped, check engine light went on and speedometer quit working.

The tranny slipped, check engine light went on, and speedometer quit working.  Car will shift if I start in low gear and manually shift it.

transmission clutch pack is worn. vehicle speed sensor (vss) should be replaced. seems about right for the car's age.

I would have to agree with Jason. The input speed sensor needs replacing. This malfunction will cause a number of warning lights to illuminate. Another cause could be the transmission shift solenoids have worn, causing the transmission to go in limp mode . Do not add more transmission fluid, this is a common mistake people make when transmission problems occur.

Whereas I had to replace transmissions in two of my Rivieras... a third one with the problems of slippery,CEL and speed odometer needle moving all over the place was solved by changing the ECM. I agree with Tennisshoes have them checked>>>SEMPER FI Good luck.
