Why does the VIN on the car not match the VIN on the title?

Asked by Rob Dec 01, 2013 at 11:20 AM about the 1963 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: General

I have a 1963 thunderbird and the
number on the title doesn't match the
VIN on the car. The VIN on the title
corresponds to info in the registry. Am I
missing something? I also have a bill of
sale from the lady I got it from. Is that
enough to do a lost title from the DMV if
two out of the three numbers match but
not the VIN on the car?

This is not a good problem to have. Your local DMV can run both VIN numbers but don't be surprised if one should come back to you as a stolen car, especially a classic 63 T-Bird. These VINs could have been mixed up in a restoration project but tread carefully. Hopefully someone has made an honest mistake. You don't mention if the numbers are possibly a type-O or completely totally off. mike

www.vindecoder.net ...go there and run both of them see what you come up with ..it's free. At some point in time the DMV in every State stopped using 0 letter and 0 number and Q...I don't recall exactly when that began but it was after 1963
