Automatic car dies when idling ,trouble starting ?

Asked by Jamie Nov 24, 2019 at 07:24 PM about the 1998 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My girlfiend drives a 98 camry, she got the car from a grandma who filled the
tank and didn't drive the car for 6 years they and took it to a mechanic
before she bought the car (i don't know what they did). She's been trying to
burn through all the bad fuel and cycle in better fuel but the car often dies
when the car slows to a stop. it idles at high and low rpms and the
tachometer is broken and rests at 0. The car is a mess, any idea on where to
start fixing this car, my first thought was replacing either the fuel filter or fuel
lines ?

fuel lines need new filters. may need new air filter too. fuel lines may be needed to be replaced.
