How do I fix this hood problem?

Asked by Demetrius Oct 31, 2020 at 10:47 AM about the 1993 Chevrolet C/K 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1993 chevy Silverado c1500. I noticed that
my hood started to turn white and did some
research. Sources say it could be oxidation so I
bought some stuff to fix it and turns out it's not
oxidation. I then noticed everytime my good gets
wet, it's turns into thi white chalky substance on
top of the hood. Does anyone know how I can fix
this?

That is oxidation but the paint is probably too far gone. A repaint is all you can do. What products did you try?

If the paint is original to the vehicle it might be worn thin from years of waxing and polishing. The white stuff you're seeing is probably the primer showing through the thin top coat. But if that's not the case (it's hard to be sure looking at a picture) you can try rubbing compound on it. Rubbing compound will remove a microscopic layer of the "dead" paint and restore the shine. Be sure to wax it when you're done with the rubbing compound. Hope that helps! Jim
